‘What Fergie did wasn’t professional but it did make for great TV’

first_img1 Flats gives his views on the world of sport every week This column appears in the current edition of Sport magazine. Download the free iPad app here, and follow on twitter @sportmagukI have some friends who have proper jobs. These friends were the ones to whom I turned for advice and introductions when I retired from rugby and became a communications director at Bath Rugby. I had no idea what I was doing, so I asked some people who did. With one notable exception, they all told me the same thing: a comms director is never more than three feet from the CEO and makes totally clear the line he or she will take on every issue. Often the boss proper will decide that line, but the ‘reputation managers’ will be closely involved because they’re the experts in this area. One friend, a comms director at a large London financial firm, said: “My last boss held two interviews in one day without consulting me. I quit on the spot.”The exception I mention was Manchester United – where, I was told over a coffee at Old Trafford, Sir Alex Ferguson ran the show in all areas. Argue with his media approach if you like, but nobody will listen. This is sport, so the gaffer says what he wants. Big businesses would never allow it, yet sport has its own rules of engagement. In rugby union, most of the head coaches who are interviewed weekly can be trusted not to be too aggressive or controversial – but if they want to be then, in my experience, they’ll do just that. There are some genuinely talented, intelligent media teams in English elite rugby, but too few are afforded the control over media messaging that their qualifications and experience deserve.Sports coaches may get interviewed a lot, but this does not make them experts. They should also recognise that emotion will also often play its part in these interviews, and therefore look to their media teams to cross-check their planned answers to likely questions. As someone now in sports media, I know that we garner far better content from those clubs whose coaches think they know best, so perhaps I ought not to mention it just in case somebody listens and changes their approach.Last week Mike Ford, the Bath head coach, responded to a close defeat to Northampton Saints by hammering the young referee for ‘guessing’ his penalty decisions. He might have a point, although I thought the referee did well.Whatever, had a media team been consulted and their educated, balanced approaches been taken on board, this controversy might have been avoided. It’s just not professional or business-savvy, even if it does make for decent telly.David Flatman is a former England rugby union international, broadcaster and punditlast_img read more

Huge West Ham boost! Bilic confirms star man in line for Liverpool return

first_img Dimitri Payet Slaven Bilic is weighing up whether to throw Dimitri Payet straight into his West Ham starting XI to face Liverpool.French playmaker Payet, one of the stars of the Hammers’ impressive start to the season, was expected to be sidelined until February with the ankle injury he suffered against Everton in November. But the 28-year-old has made such a rapid recovery that he could be pitched in from the start when Liverpool visit Upton Park on Saturday.Bilic said: “Is he in contention to start? Yes.“He is back, he’s been training with us for a couple of days and depending on how he does today I’m expecting him to be in the squad and available for the game.“We will see how much he is going to participate in the game, but he is back and it’s a great boost for us.”Winger Victor Moses and defender Winston Reid have also recovered from injuries after a couple of months on the sidelines. But Bilic feels they are unlikely to be ready to face the Reds and has pencilled the duo in to return against Wolves in the FA Cup the following weekend.“Victor Moses and Winston Reid are back, it’s a good situation for us,” he added. “They are lacking fitness but they have started training with us.“But for the Liverpool game, no, probably not. They only just started training with us so they will be more for the FA Cup game. That will be good recovery for them.”Bilic will also check on the fitness of left-back Aaron Cresswell, who missed Monday’s 2-1 win over Southampton with a hamstring problem. 1last_img read more

Tips on how to shake the salt habit

first_imgWASHINGTON – Some tips to cut a high-salt diet:Know how much sodium you’re eating – 2,300 milligrams a day is the upper limit for most people. Those with high blood pressure are urged to eat much less, and 1,500 mg is plenty for good health.Read food labels. Three-fourths of daily sodium intake comes from processed foods, and they are required to list the amount of sodium per serving on the label.Comparison shop. The amount of salt added to different foods can vary widely by brand. Limit consumption of smoked or salt-cured meats, such as hot dogs, ham, bacon and lunch meats. At a restaurant, ask for salad dressing and other sauces on the side, and ask that your food be prepared without salt or monosodium glutamate, MSG.Remove the salt shaker. On the Net:National Institutes of Health blood pressure and salt info: http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/American Heart Association: http://www.americanheart.org/presenter.jhtml?identifier=2106Britain’s lower-salt campaign: http://www.salt.gov.uk/index.html160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Even chicken broth, a staple for Thanksgiving gravy, now comes in low-sodium versions.Cook from scratch whenever possible. Substitute garlic, sage and other herbs, for salt, or try salt-free seasonings like Mrs. Dash. Other flavorings also can substitute for salt, like lemon on fish; roasting vegetables like red peppers to bring out their flavor; low-salt marinades for meat.Limit convenience foods like pizza and frozen dinners. A single slice of some pizzas can account for nearly half your daily sodium allotment.Taste isn’t always an indicator of salt content. Some breakfast cereals can have more salt than potato chips. That’s because sprinkling salt on the surface of a food makes the flavor go farther than when it is mixed into a more complex food.Eat more fresh fruits and vegetables. Holiday weekend is full of new films

first_img AD Quality Auto 360p 720p 1080p Top articles1/5READ MOREPettersson scores another winner, Canucks beat KingsI’d give “Hitman” and “The Mist” the best chance of emerging from that pack and getting some respectable grosses of maybe $15million, while “Christmas” could crack $10million. I think “Rush” is a hard sell. All have to contend with last week’s top film, “Beowulf,” which is only a week into its run, along with strong holdovers “Bee Movie” and “American Gangster.” LIMITED AND EXPANDING: The well-reviewed “No Country for Old Men” has expanded to 800 theaters and will be going after that “American Gangster” audience. Bob Dylan fans should be mighty intrigued by “I’m Not There,” a Todd Haynes-directed film opening in 130 theaters that has Dylan portrayed at different points in his life by several different actors, including Christian Bale, Heath Ledger and even Cate Blanchett! ADRIENNE SHELLY BENEFIT: The movie “Waitress” is one of the gems of 2007. But you watch it with kind of a heavy heart because Adrienne Shelly, the woman who wrote and directed and co-stars in the movie, was murdered before its release. On Tuesday, StoryMakers Studio is hosting a screening of the art house hit at the Mann’s Chinese Theatre complex in Hollywood benefiting the Adrienne Shelly Foundation, which was set up in her memory to help young women pursue filmmaking dreams. Pie, which is integral to the plot of “Waitress,” will absolutely be served! Five new releases opened wide on Wednesday so there is plenty to choose from after you’ve completed all that holiday shopping. If you want an ideal movie to take the family – or even a date – to, I say go see Disney’s “Enchanted.” I expect it will emerge in first place and rack up some terrific grosses during its first five days of release. This part-animated, mostly live-action fairy tale is massively appealing and received rave reviews. Opening in 3,500 theaters, “Enchanted” should easily have more than $40million in the till by Monday. BATTLE FOR SECOND: The four other newcomers in wide release: the fantasy drama “August Rush” starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Keri Russell and Robin Williams in 2,200 locations; the action flick “Hitman,” playing in 2,300 theaters; the horror film “The Mist,” trying to scare up business in 2,500 spots; and the family drama “This Christmas,” playing in 1,700 theaters. last_img read more

Newcastle will cash in on star man IF they lose Premier League survival fight

first_img1 Georginio Wijnaldum in action for Newcastle Newcastle will be willing to listen to offers for star man Georginio Wijnaldum should they get relegated to the Championship. The Dutchman has been a shining light in an otherwise dismal season for the Magpies, who are without a win in their last five and sit three points adrift of safety.Wijnaldum, however, has impressed since he signed from PSV Eindhoven last summer, scoring nine goals in 33 appearances. But according to De Telegraaf, Wijnaldum is unlikely to hang around at St James’ Park if they go down and Newcastle are preparing themselves for a wave of bids for the attacking midfielder.Newcastle paid £14.5m for the 25-year-old last summer and will be looking to recoup the vast majority of that fee should they decide to sell.last_img read more
