Caldo Verde

With the seasons changing here in Northwest Montana, fall is bringing colder weather and shorter days. This makes me hunger for comfort food more than any other time of the year. And when it comes to designing menus to satisfy this hunger, hearty soups and stews are some of my favorites. The recipe possibilities are endless, but one of my favorites, for both its simplicity and versatility, is caldo verde. Caldo verde, which translates to “green broth,” is a classic stew served in Spain and Portugal that combines kale, potatoes and sausage to create an amazing dish that is suitable for both lunch and dinner. To get started, you will need to gather the following ingredients:2 sweet onions, diced2 celery stalks, diced1 bunch green kale, ribs removed and rough chopped4 linguica or andouille sausage links, diced4 cloves garlic, minced4 medium russet potatoes, peeled and cut into one-inch cubes1 t. chili flakes10-15 threads saffron2 quarts chicken stockSalt and pepperOlive oilFirst, in a heavy bottom stockpot, heat two tablespoons olive oil over medium-high heat. Add the sausage and cook, stirring occasionally, for about three to four minutes until some color has developed and you have rendered some of the fat. Remove the sausage from your pan and set aside on paper towels.Next, add the onion, celery, kale and garlic to your pot, season with salt and pepper, and cook for eight to 10 minutes or until the vegetables have softened but with no color. At this point we add the potatoes, chili flakes, reserved sausage and saffron to the pot and stir to combine with the vegetables. Now, add the chicken stock, pre-season with salt and pepper and bring to a simmer. Slowly simmer the caldo verde until the potatoes are just tender and all of the amazing flavors have come together. Finally, adjust your seasoning one last time and serve with a delicious loaf of crusty bread. Enjoy!Josh Auerhammer is the chef/owner of the Culinary Design Studio in Bigforklast_img read more

Player arrives to house-hunt today, Everton on verge of deal, sounds…

first_imgDespite Everton reaching an agreement with Anderlecht for another Henry Onyekuru loan, the Nigerian doesn’t want to return to the Belgian club. There have been various issues throughout Onyekuru’s time with Anderlecht and it seems there’s a mixture of blame, this is certainly not all about a young footballer being petulant.Anderlecht had always wanted Onyekuru to have knee surgery before Christmas, and the situation at one stage looked a battle of wills, with the Belgian club’s stance seeming slightly strange given the player was only on loan.Disagreeing with the Anderlecht decision, Onyekuru and Everton went for the non surgery option to give the player a better chance of being ready for the World Cup.But there’s been disagreement over whether he’s been ready to play, and the situation has ended up costing the youngster his World Cup place.Embed from Getty ImagesBelgian newspaper HLN report on Thursday that Onyekuru is now close to signing for Borussia Monchengladbach, with Besiktas also being interested.Expected in the city today, HLN say Onyekuru will even be house-hunting in Dusseldorf. Gladbach are prepared to meet the loan conditions of Everton, and this all looks good to go.by Taboolaby TaboolaSponsored LinksSponsored LinksPromoted LinksPromoted LinksTrending TodayForge of Empires – Free Online GameIf You Like to Play, this City-Building Game is a Must-Have. Raonic, Benneteau withdraw from French Open

first_imgWorld number six Milos Raonic and reigning French Open men’s doubles champion Julien Benneteau announced on Thursday to pull out of this year’s tournament, both due to injuries, a media report said on Friday.Raonic has been forced to withdraw after failing to recover from a right foot surgery he had after being knocked out of the Madrid Open quarterfinals by the eventual champion Andy Murray two weeks ago, Xinhua reported. The 24-year-old Canadian first suffered the injury at April’s Monte Carlo Masters where he retired from his quarterfinal encounter against Tomas Berdych.”I am sad to have to unfortunately withdraw from Roland Garros this year, I tried my best to be back and healthy in time after surgery,” he wrote on his Twitter account.”I will continue my rehab and proceed with preparations for a 100 percent strong Wimbledon and Queens run. Thank you for the love and support,” added Raonic, whose best performance at Roland Garros came last year as a quarterfinalist who lost in straight sets to Novak Djokovic. With Raonic’s withdrawal, world number seven and nine-time champion Rafael Nadal will be promoted to the sixth seeding in Friday’s draw.Benneteau, last year’s men’s doubles winner along with his fellow Frenchman Edouard Roger-Vasselin, will not be able to defend his men’s doubles title due to an athletic pubalgia that has plagued him since March. The French tennis federation announced Benneteau’s withdrawal from both singles and doubles on Thursday and that his spot will be given to a lucky loser in the main draw, which gets underway on Sunday.advertisementlast_img read more

Responding to the defeat, Keane told Sky Sports: “If you are looking at the board, how much money have they spent?”There was a feel-good factor for Ole at the start. ESPN’s Poll Reveals Alabama Perceived As College Football’s Best Coaching Job

first_imgESPN SportsNation poll about the best college football coaching job. It’s always fun to debate which college football program is the most prestigious in the country. There are a number of ways to measure such an honor, including determining which head coaching job is the most coveted in the country. We went through and named our 16 most desirable head coaching gigs this past November. This week, ESPN asked the general public to chime in.In an ESPN SportsNation poll, Alabama was voted as the best coaching job in college football. The Crimson Tide received 35% of the vote, ahead of No. 2 Ohio State by a decent margin. Texas and USC came in third and fourth, though, to be fair, there were only four teams listed. “Other” took home 26% of the vote.Fans in specific regions made it clear that they believe their program should have been listed. It’s obvious that supporters of Oregon, Michigan, Nebraska, Oklahoma, LSU, Florida and Florida State felt that they should have been options as well. ESPNESPNDo you agree with the poll? Is Alabama really the best job in the country, or has Nick Saban’s success made it that way?last_img read more

Video: John Calipari Addresses Post-Game Actions Of Willie Cauley-Stein, Andrew Harrison

first_imgjohn calipari final four interviewjohn calipari final four interviewKentucky lost its Final Four contest against Wisconsin Saturday night, and in the aftermath, a number of the team’s players committed some transgressions they’d probably like to take back. Willie Cauley-Stein, among others, left the court without shaking hands with the Badgers. And Andrew Harrison made a disparaging remark during the post-game press conference about Wisconsin’s Frank Kaminsky. Sunday, Wildcats head coach John Calipari sat down with Campus Insiders’ Bonnie Bernstein to address both situations.Coach Cal explained that he loves his players, but they sometimes do “dumb things” that they later need to apologize for. He also said that Harrison will not be facing any discipline for his actions. It’s going to an interesting offseason in Lexington, to say the least.last_img read more

Five More Major Regulators to Clear Hamburg Süd Aquisition

first_imgzoom Regulatory bodies of China, Korea, Brazil, Chile and South Africa are still to clear Maersk Line’s acquisition of German counterpart Hamburg Süd, Maersk said in an update on the transaction.Danish shipping company added it has so far obtained approvals from 12 jurisdictions for the USD 4 billion-deal, out of 23 sought. These include nods from the US Department of Justice in March, and the EU Commission in April, 2017, subject to conditions. In June, Maersk Line announced sale of Mercosul Line to CMA CGM so as to support the Brazilian regulatory approval process.Namely, Hamburg Süd already has a subsidiary in Brazil, Alianca Navegacao e Logistica, which is a major cabotage carrier along the Brazilian coastline. Keeping Mercosul would have pushed Maersk’s control of South America East Coast’s cabotage to 80 percent.“The transaction is progressing as planned,” the company reassured, noting that the final closing of the acquisition is expected during the 4th quarter of this year.“We are in close dialogue with all relevant authorities providing necessary input for approval.”As informed, an integration team is working hard to make the process as smooth as possible.Estimated cost synergies are expected to range between USD 350-400 million by 2019 as earlier announced.“Based on Maersk’s market research, the German container carrier’s volume and business is holding up quite nicely,“ Maersk’s CEO, Søren Skou said commenting on the transaction progress, adding that this is a good sign for the future business integration. To remind, Maersk Line said it would acquire Hamburg Süd for EUR 3.7 billion (USD 4 billion) on a cash and debt-free basis, which it plans to fully finance through an already secured syndicated loan facility.Once the acquisition is completed, Maersk Line and Hamburg Süd will have a total container capacity of around 3.9 million TEU (3.3 million TEU) and an 18.7% (16%) global capacity share. The combined fleet will consist of 743 container vessels.World Maritime News Staff,Once the acquisition is completed, Maersk Line and Hamburg Süd will have a total container capacity of around 3.9 million TEU (3.3 million TEU) and an 18.7% (16%) global capacity share.
