PostPost Fixes Twitter’s Sucky Search

first_imgFacebook is Becoming Less Personal and More Pro… Twitter’s features need some work. It has search, and it has a discovery tab, but they’re weak. Twitter is so focused on what’s happening right this second that it lets deeper searching and browsing go by the wayside.Enter PostPost. It has been around for a while as a Twitter search engine that actually remembers things that happened more than a couple days ago. But now it has a new feature called the Timeline Topline, which surfaces topics discussed by the most important people in your stream. jon mitchell The Twitter search page says, in huge letters, “See what’s happening right now.” It’ll show you that, sure. But if you’re looking for something more than moments old, good luck. Twitter is working on search, buying start-ups and so forth, but we’re still waiting on results. Twitter search can be useful, but it’s severely limited. If you use the tools Twitter provides, tweets that are more than few days old fall off the edge of the Earth. In December, Twitter launched its latest redesign, centered around the “Discover” tab. “Discover” shows trends, hashtags, popular and promoted stuff. It’s the ads page. There aren’t many compelling reasons to use it for discovering anything, especially considering what kinds of mind-numbing topics tend to trend on Twitter.Twitter’s Discover tab. Feel yourself getting dumber?PostPost is better than Twitter itself for solving both of these problems. The search, which I’ve been using for a while, is especially good. It’s not just that it finds older content; I think the PostPost algorithm provides more accurate results than Twitter search. Just type in a word, name or hashtag, and the results come back at lightning speed. You can also filter results by ‘”Everything,’ ‘Links,’ ‘Photos’ and ‘Videos.’The new “Timeline Topline” feature builds on those algorithmic smarts to surface more topics to explore. It’s personalized to you, unlike Twitter’s Discover tab. It picks out 150 people who are most relevant to you, mixing people you mention most and people who are popular globally. The Topline displays topics in red, but it also shows via links for the people who are talking about them.As you can see, not all the topics are clickable. But they’re better than #TenAttractivePeopleIFollow, and I know who the people are, so I’m still inclined to see what @fromedome has to say about love.PostPost’s Timeline Topline. Hey! I actually care about those people and things! Why 150? Dunbar’s Number, the theoretical limit of the number of people with whom anyone can maintain a relationship. It’s the same limit Path imposes on the number of friends. This is a light discovery tool. It’s not the deep-diving Twitter sonar offered by Bottlenose. But I think of PostPost as a more digestible add-on to Twitter that doesn’t dispense with the past. It’s simple and Twitter-like, it just does things that Twitter, for some strange reason, doesn’t do itself.Image of Henry Rollins’ back tattoo via Rawfit Tags:#Product Reviews#twitter#web A Comprehensive Guide to a Content Audit The Dos and Don’ts of Brand Awareness Videos Guide to Performing Bulk Email Verification Related Posts last_img read more

ESPN’s Poll Reveals Alabama Perceived As College Football’s Best Coaching Job

first_imgESPN SportsNation poll about the best college football coaching job. It’s always fun to debate which college football program is the most prestigious in the country. There are a number of ways to measure such an honor, including determining which head coaching job is the most coveted in the country. We went through and named our 16 most desirable head coaching gigs this past November. This week, ESPN asked the general public to chime in.In an ESPN SportsNation poll, Alabama was voted as the best coaching job in college football. The Crimson Tide received 35% of the vote, ahead of No. 2 Ohio State by a decent margin. Texas and USC came in third and fourth, though, to be fair, there were only four teams listed. “Other” took home 26% of the vote.Fans in specific regions made it clear that they believe their program should have been listed. It’s obvious that supporters of Oregon, Michigan, Nebraska, Oklahoma, LSU, Florida and Florida State felt that they should have been options as well. ESPNESPNDo you agree with the poll? Is Alabama really the best job in the country, or has Nick Saban’s success made it that way?last_img read more

Jamaica Gets Additional Area Code

first_img As at 12:01 a.m. today (May 31), Jamaica became the first country in the English-speaking Caribbean to utilize an additional area code – 658.From now until October 30 will be designated as the permissive period, which means seven-digit calls will still be allowed based on a collaboration between the Office of Utilities Regulation (OUR) and telecommunication providers, FLOW and Digicel. However, after this permissive period, it will become mandatory that persons dial the 10 digits. The new area code will work alongside the existing 876 that was first assigned in 1996 when it was the view then that it would provide sufficient numbering capacity for the next 20 years of demand growth. However, 13 years later the country had to consider the introduction of a new area code to augment the existing 876 numbering space.Science, Energy and Technology Minister, Dr. the Hon. Andrew Wheatley, at an OUR media workshop on the additional area code and 10-digit dialing, in April, cited the increased competition among local telecommunication providers as the primary reason for the proposed introduction of the new 658 area code.Others reasons, Dr. Wheatley listed, include: the introduction of an increase in the growth of home and business telephones; and the rapid spike in wireless phones, pagers, modems and fax machines.Data from the OUR indicate that the new area code will provide more than seven million additional numbers for the next decade. The method of relief dialing provided by the code is known as the standard overlay method and will serve the same geographic area used by the existing 876 code. This is favoured by telecommunication carriers and service providers due to cost considerations.Meanwhile, in a statement to its customers, telecommunication company FLOW is reminding customers to update their contact list with the 876 prefix before dialing the 7-digit numbers. Director James Gunn fired from Guardians 3 over old tweets

first_imgLOS ANGELES, Calif. – James Gunn was fired Friday as director of “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” because of old tweets that recently emerged where he joked about subjects like pedophilia and rape.Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn announced the removal.“The offensive attitudes and statements discovered on James’ Twitter feed are indefensible and inconsistent with our studio’s values, and we have severed our business relationship with him,” Horn said in a statement.Gunn has been writer and director of the “Guardians of the Galaxy” franchise from the start, taking an obscure Marvel Comics title about a group of multicolored misfits and turning it into a space opera decked with comedy and retro music that made Chris Pratt a major movie star. Through two installments the franchise has brought in more than $1.5 billion in global box office.Gunn apologized for the old tweets Friday after his firing, echoing similar sentiments he expressed on Twitter a day earlier.“My words of nearly a decade ago were, at the time, totally failed and unfortunate efforts to be provocative. I have regretted them for many years since — not just because they were stupid, not at all funny, wildly insensitive, and certainly not provocative like I had hoped, but also because they don’t reflect the person I am today or have been for some time,” Gunn said in a statement. “Regardless of how much time has passed, I understand and accept the business decisions taken today. Even these many years later, I take full responsibility for the way I conducted myself then.”Gunn’s current Twitter account is heavy on left-leaning politics, and some on the right with whom he’d sparred found and promoted the tweets from 2008 to 2011 that led to his firing.Disney did not announce a replacement director for “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.” Gunn had been writing the script and it’s not clear how far along he was or whether new writers will be brought in. Marvel Studios has not announced a release date, though Gunn had said 2020 was the target.Marvel has staked a lot on the third “Guardians” movie. Gunn has said the film would end the current iteration of the Guardians of the Galaxy and launch another decade, or more, of Marvel films. In addition to Pratt, the “Guardians” franchise stars Zoe Saldana and Dave Bautista, and features the voices of Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel. The characters also were an essential part of this year’s Disney and Marvel megahit “Avengers: Infinity War.”Fans at Comic-Con in San Diego said they disapproved of Gunn’s tweets, but were mixed on how they felt about his firing.“It’s unfortunate to hear and makes me question whether I would see a movie like that even without his creative involvement,” Mario Panighetti of Mountain View, California said.Joanne Renda of Toronto said, “It’s never really funny to joke about that stuff, but copping to it is the first step. Everyone deserves a second chance. It’s kind of crazy our culture today, firing people right away.”___AP Film Writer Lindsey Bahr contributed to this story from San Diego.___Follow Andrew Dalton on Twitter: .last_img read more
