Maersk Line’s Triple-E Makes Its Maiden Call at Shanghai Yangshan Port, China (VIDEO)

first_imgMaersk Line’s first Triple-E vessel “Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller” made its maiden call at Shanghai Yangshan port on 19 July. Dignitaries from local authorities, Shanghai International Port Group and Maersk Line gathered for a port call ceremony to celebrate the historic moment.Mr. David Williams, Managing Director of Maersk Line East & Central China commented on the mega-vessel’s maiden call at Shanghai: “I’m very excited to welcome the first Triple-E vessel calling at Shanghai. Triple-E will help position us to meet China’s dynamic growth in foreign trade in the most efficient way possible and help us further tap into the development of China.”The first Maersk vessel called at Shanghai was almost 90 years ago, signifying the beginning of Maersk Group’s business in China. In 1968, Maersk Line had only one non-containerised service connecting Asia and Europe that consisted of twelve sailings per year and carried approximately 8,000 tonnes of cargo.Today, Maersk Line vessels call at all major ports in China offering a wide range of dedicated weekly sailings to all parts of the world. For Maersk Line’s Asia-Europe trade, two-thirds of the cargo goes to and from China. Mr. Chen Xuyuan, the Chairman and President of Shanghai International Port Group said: “We welcome the Triple-E vessel to call at the Port of Shanghai. The Port of Shanghai, the world’s largest in terms of throughput, has the facilities and experience to service this great new vessel. We will only benefit from the efficiency and environmental features of these new vessels.”“The vessel is so huge and beautiful! More importantly, it features innovative technology, such as waste heat recovery system, leading to the energy efficiency and environmental performance. It emits 50% less CO2 per container moved compared with the current average on the Asia-Europe route. The Chinese government is seeking solutions to save energy and reduce carbon emissions, and I believe our practice can provide valuable experience in this regard.” shared Mr. Hu Ke, Head of Government Relations, Maersk China. The Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller left Shanghai to continue its maiden voyage. Medical Shows Like “Grey’s Anatomy” Are Giving You False Expectations About Your Medical Care

first_imgFor the study, doctors watched all 269 episodes of the show, focusing on the 290 trauma patients.  And they found that their experiences didn’t necessarily mirror those of REAL trauma patients. If you watch “Grey’s Anatomy” to see who’s sleeping with who, or for the intermittent shots of blood and guts, cool.  But you probably shouldn’t go any deeper than that. For example, the cases on the show tended to be more severe, and progress more quickly from the ER to the OR.  Also, their conclusions were more cut-and-dried.  On the show, patients tended to either die or get sent home pretty quickly. A new study says that medical dramas . . . particularly “Grey’s” . . . can give you false expectations when it comes to the realities of medical care, treatment, and recovery.center_img In reality, trauma patients tend to take a lot longer before they’re ready to go home. Also, 22% of trauma patients on “Grey’s Anatomy” DIED . . . compared with 7% in the real world.last_img read more

Compliance: A Growth Business in Consulting

first_imgWith legislators globally cranking out new and revised compliance regulations every few months, what can a company do to sort it all out? Changes related to Sarbanes-Oxley have been grabbing a lot of the headlines, but it’s not only Sarbanes-Oxley. Consider these reports:May 23rd. SEC Adopts new Guidelines for Sarbanes-OxleyJune 5th. S&P Unveils Three-Level Approach to Basel II Capital RuleJune 14th. Coming to America: The EU Privacy DirectiveJune 15th. Fuzzy Understandings of FERPAJune 14th. Deadline Approaches on HIPAA Rules for Wellness ProgramsJune 14th. MiFID — best execution still a concern — and the Boat sails onClearly top on the list for most companies is just finding out what legislation is out there and which things directly affect their business. What legislation do they need to be compliant with, and how can they achieve compliance? There is a cottage industry that has grown up around advising companies about how to respond to compliance legislation. Compliance consultants are cropping up everywhere, usually specializing in one particular type of legislation. In the UK there is the Association of Professional Compliance Consultants (APCC), for consultants who advise firms regulated by the Financial Services Authority. While there doesn’t seem to be an equivalent association in the US, there is certainly no lack of businesses in the US performing compliance consulting services. As long as legislators continue to see a need for strict oversight of all aspects of running a business, and as long as those legislators continue to see a need to tweak the rules governing that oversight, Compliance Consulting will continue to be a growth business.last_img read more

Mississippi ~ Personal Income Tax: First Time Homebuyer Accounts Enacted, Exempted From Tax

first_imgCCH Tax Day ReportMississippi has enacted legislation establishing first-time home buyer savings accounts. Personal income taxpayers can exclude amounts contributed to and all interest or other income earned from an account and funds withdrawn or distributed from an account for the payment of eligible costs by or on behalf of a qualified beneficiary from the gross income of the account holder. “Eligible costs” are the down payment and allowable closing costs for the purchase of a single-family residence in Mississippi by a qualified beneficiary. An “account holder” is an individual who establishes an account with a financial institution for which the account holder claims a first-time home buyer savings account status on their Mississippi income tax return. The amount of contributions made by an account holder in any tax year that can be excluded from gross income cannot exceed $2,500 for any account holder who files an individual return or $5,000 for any married couple who are joint account holders and file a joint return. If funds are withdrawn from an account for any purpose other than the payment of eligible costs by or on behalf of a qualified beneficiary, then the funds withdrawn from an account will be added to gross income. Further, there will be a penalty calculated using the federal Form 1099 showing the amount of income exempted from state income tax and assessing a 10% penalty on the amount. However, the penalty will not apply to the extent the funds were withdrawn because of the qualified beneficiary’s death or disability, a disbursement of assets of the account pursuant to a filing for protection under the United States Bankruptcy Code, or the funds are transferred from an account into another first time homebuyer account for the benefit of another qualified beneficiary.H.B. 1601, Laws 2017, effective January 1, 2017last_img read more

Ivan Lendl gives tennis lovers in Calcutta a glimpse of new, modern style of play

first_imgLendl (left) and Alexander: Youth versus experienceThe two-day US $100,000 (Rs 900,000) tennis spectacle organised by the All-India Lawn Tennis Association (AILTA) at the Netaji Indoor Stadium in Calcutta, ended with 21-year-old Czech superstar Ivan Lendl winning in a ‘common canter’.This event is a milestone in the history of Indian,Lendl (left) and Alexander: Youth versus experienceThe two-day US $100,000 (Rs 900,000) tennis spectacle organised by the All-India Lawn Tennis Association (AILTA) at the Netaji Indoor Stadium in Calcutta, ended with 21-year-old Czech superstar Ivan Lendl winning in a ‘common canter’.This event is a milestone in the history of Indian tennis on two counts: it offered the largest ever prize money for a single event, and it brought in an array of some of the top ranking international stars, including Lendl.Lendl’s style gave tennis lovers in Calcutta a glimpse of the new, modern style of play, which has (developed) due to the slower standardised artificial playing surfaces which are now used all over the world.Compared to the smooth strokes of the past champions like Rosewall, Hoad and Laver, Lendl’s style – consisting of a devastating whipped forehand supported by a backhand which can be both sliced or alternatively heavily top spun – is not attractive to watch. His defence seems impenetrable on the slower surfaces and he wins his points by putting away anything short of a length with his deadly forehand. Mobility, tenacity and a Borg-like consistency are the pillars on which Lendl’s game rests.Though he produced some spectacular overhead smashes when he was lobbed, Lendl during an interview admitted to a slight weakness on the volley and slated that he was working on it. Lendl seems to be on the threshold of dominating world tennis and becoming a threat to John McEnroe. If there was an award for courage and guts it would have gone to John Alexander of Australia who lost in two straight sets to Lendl in the final. In the face of Lendl’s obvious superiority, he fought till the very last point. Alexander’s booming heavy serve followed by sorties to the net kept him alive.advertisementTowards the end his serve cracked under Lendl’s relentless pressure and the nine-year age gap surfaced. While Lendl was chasing every ball like a terrier, Alexander seemed sluggish and tired in comparison. Alexander arrived in Calcutta barely six hours before the scheduled time of play. His airdash from Sydney began two days earlier, when he was informed that he would be replacing Vijay Amritraj.Tired Game: After a short nap the thirty-year-old, six-foot, three-inch Australian came on to the court to defeat the highly rated Elliot Teltscher, who was a replacement for Vitas Gerulaitis, another casualty. Teltscher, who had arrived at 6 a.m. on the morning of the match after a sixteen-hour flight, looked pale and drawn.Lendl in action: Killer instinctHe played like a robot and took little interest in the proceedings. In his opening match against Alexander, he lost in straight sets. On the second day after a good night’s rest, Teltscher produced better tennis in his match against the Pole, Wojtek Fibak. With a springy gait and quicksilver mobility Teltscher produced an all-court game with a large variety of shots. His backhand hit with top spin and a snap of the wrist was deadly.Serving for the match at five to four in the second set he was unable to contend with the stout resistance put up by the unflappable Fibak. He lost his serve and the set when he was nosed out by Fibak by seven points to four in the tie breaker.Thereafter, much to the disappointment of the crowd, Teltscher, as the Americans would say, “blew his top”. He attempted to hit each ball at supersonic speed and hustled through the proceedings by moving fast in between points and changing ends without using the customary ninety seconds allowed for towelling and refreshments. The 29-year-old Fibak, a consistent performer of a high calibre, lived up to his reputation. With his classic style and smooth shots, he produced some scintillating rallies in his opening match against Lendl. Fibak’s match against Lendl was the highlight of the two-day event. The absence of a punishing killer shot and a penetrating serve in his repertoire is probably what has kept Fibak from reaching the summit of the game. His victory against Teltscher earned him the Number Three position in the event. The hazards of promoting a top-drawer, two-day event proved to be a nightmare for the organisers. The time margins are so slender that a fog at Dum Dum could have seen Indian standbys pressed into service. Amritraj’s absence was greatly felt: his match against Lendl could well have been a memorable one.Breakthrough: While this event has certainly proved to be a breakthrough as far as commercial promotion Indian tennis is concerned, it is very necessary that facilities to channel the enthusiasm thus generated must be made available to the younger and junior Indian players.advertisementAsked for the reasons for the spectacular success being achieved in the tennis world by a number of young Czech players, Lendl told India Today: “It is very simple – all the older players are coaching and giving their experience to the younger players. During the summer holidays and other vacations, 16 to 18 tournaments are organised for juniors and a winner in any of these events would be required to play four matches a day – two singles and two doubles. So, apart from coaching, the youngsters also have a great deal of competitive experience.”last_img read more
