Durban’s massive Cornubia development under way

first_imgA R25 billion mixed use development will create homes, retail opportunities and create an industrial park between Durban and King Shaka International Airport. The Cornubia mall, as envisaged by developers. (Image: Cornubia)Brand South Africa reporterPresident Jacob Zuma officially launched the government’s massive Cornubia development on Sunday. The R25-billion mixed-use development of housing, commercial and industrial sites is set to change the skyline between Durban and King Shaka International Airport.“I am hopeful that with integrated human settlement projects like Cornubia, we will be able to effectively eradicate a significant number of the informal settlements across various areas in eThekwini and across South Africa,” Zuma said, noting that the project would cost the government R25-billion over 20 years.Developers have integrated a public transport system that serves the entire development. (Image: Cornubia)Over 24 000 new homesCornubia is a mixed-use, mixed-income, 1 200-hectare development, with 80 hectares earmarked for industrial development and the rest for commercial, housing and other social and public facilities, including schools, creches, clinics, multi-purpose halls, police stations and post offices. It is strategically located between Durban’s wealthier Mt Edgecombe and Umhlanga areas and disadvantaged areas north of the city such as Inanda, Ntuzuma, KwaMashu, Phoenix, Ottawa and Waterloo.Situated some 15 kilometres south of King Shaka International, Cornubia will see over 24 000 new mixed-income homes being built over the next 10 years, 15 000 for subsidised housing and the balance for a wide range of affordability levels. What started as a joint venture between the eThekwini Metro Municipality and agriculture and agri-processing company Tongaat Hulett has since been adopted by the Cabinet as a national priority project, bringing in all spheres of government as official partners.Phase 1A of the development was completed in September last year at a cost of nearly R100-million, and the first 482 beneficiaries moved into their new homes in November. Construction of phase 1B is under way and promises another 2 100 homes at a cost of around R560-million.The first homes built at Cornubia will go to residents of nearby informal settlements. (Image: Cornubia)The units consist of two bedrooms, a lounge, a kitchen and ablution facilities – a far cry from the usual one-bedroom RDP starter homes. The development is expected to create 48 000 new sustainable job opportunities over a period of 15 years, and a further 15 000 during the construction phase.Zuma said the residents would also be linked to the city’s new Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, with planned BRT routes linking Cornubia to areas including Umhlanga, Phoenix, the Dube Trade Port and the King Shaka International Airport nearby.‘We now have so much space’The first phase of Cornubia residents are being drawn from surrounding informal settlements, including Blackburn, Stonebridge and Ridgeview, as well as transit or waiting camps in Clermont. One of the beneficiaries, who moved into her home in November, is 66-year-old Lucy Xaba. After spending five years in Lindela, a waiting camp in Waybank, Clermont, Xaba finally has her own roof over her head. The home is a godsend to the pensioner, whose husband, a construction worker and the family’s breadwinner, died a few years ago. Originally from KwaSwayimane, in Pietermaritzburg, she had to raise her children alone, and made ends meet by selling potatoes.“Life has indeed been tough for me, but I am happy today because my suffering has come to an end. I never expected that I would ever live in a place like this,” Xaba said.Living in Cornubia was like returning to the promised land, said 51-year-old Inderlal Mothilal, who lives with his wife Mominbibi, 49, and their two children. The couple now earn a living by running a local tuckshop where residents can buy bread, milk and other essentials.Just a few doors down is the Muthia family. After 46 years of marriage, James and Sally Muthia finally have a home of their own. Originally from Blackburn Village – an old slum near Phoenix – the couple’s home is known by residents as having the best garden in the area. “My new home is my pride and joy, that is why I take pride in my garden,” said James.Added Sally: “My husband was always sickly, but now since we have moved to Cornubia his blood pressure is down and he has been feeling much better.”Living in a mixed community is quite nice, says 26-year-old mother of three Zanele Cele. Zanele lives in Cornubia with her father Zozwane Ngcobo and mother Eunice Cele, who are both unemployed. The family moved to Cornubia after living in a one-room shack in Clermont. “We now have so much of space, and a bathroom – it is really a different life that we are used to, and we love it,” Cele said.“Living with people of mixed races is very nice. We learn a lot about different cultures, and Cornubia is how South Africa should be, one big happy mixed family.”Would you like to use this article in your publication or on your website? What Twitter Can Learn From Pinterest Conversations

first_imgTags:#best messaging apps#Conversations#Direct Messages#Pinterest#twitter A Comprehensive Guide to a Content Audit selena larson The Dos and Don’ts of Brand Awareness Videos Guide to Performing Bulk Email Verificationcenter_img Related Posts Whenever I see something on Pinterest that reminds me of a friend, I immediately want to share it. Usually I’ll share it on my friend’s Facebook wall, or text a link to the post—emailing just seems rather clunky. I don’t want to repin a friend’s style on my board, and sometimes it’s too personal to share publicly. That’s why I’m excited about the new Pinterest Conversations, a private messaging feature that makes sharing pins with friends—and then chatting about them—so much easier. While Pinterest’s new messaging feature is focused on sharing pins, the premise of taking a public post and sharing it privately could apply to text or links, like, say, tweets. And I hope Twitter is paying attention, because Conversations is exactly what Twitter’s direct messaging feature should be. Kicking Off The ConversationTo send someone a pin, simply tap on the paper airplane icon and add your friend’s name. It’s the same icon that sends a pin as an email. In the mobile app, you can tap the notifications icon, and toggle to “messages” to reply to or compose chats. Chat heads—almost identical to those in Facebook Messenger—are used to label chats. On the Web, you’ll see a messaging option under your notifications, and messages will appear to the left of your screen. It’s a bit slower to chat on the Web—if you’re having problems sending and receiving messages and notifications, try logging out and logging back in to Pinterest first. Conversations can come in quite handy for a maid of honor helping plan her sister’s bridal shower or a group of friends creating a trip itinerary. You can add as many fellow pinners to a chat as you want, as well as search pins and add pins directly from the chat. It’s a great way to get feedback on a particular pin, but it also works as a smooth and simple messenger. There are no sticker packs, and no ephemeral photos—just pins, links, and texts. It took five Pinterest employees one week to build a Conversations prototype, a Pinterest spokesperson told ReadWrite. When they presented it to company executives, the product was fast-tracked and implemented on all Pinterest platforms within three months. Twitter, Please Learn From PinterestTwitter’s direct messaging feature is in desperate need of an update. CEO Dick Costolo has been hinting about it for months, but short of a few minor tweaks, including adding the ability to send photos privately, nothing has changed. Direct messages still don’t accept most links, and on both mobile and the Web, messages are still frustratingly slow and unintuitive. There is hope, however. In an interview with Business Insider on July 29, Costolo said that the difference between Twitter direct messages and other messaging services like Facebook Messenger will be the ability to take a public tweet and discuss it privately with other people. In other words, Pinterest Conversations, but for tweets. “Specifically, being able to take a public conversation and being able to migrate it to a private channel,” Costolo told Business Insider. “So, taking a public tweet, and being able to have a conversation about that public tweet with a private group of people is a compelling use case.”Pinterest Conversations are simple to start, and because the application sticks to the basics—it’s not bulging with unnecessary features—it does one thing and does it well: Starts the conversation around pins.Replying publicly to tweets on Twitter can be intimidating. Most people have public accounts, and that means anything they tweet or link to can be seen by anyone on the Web. The only place there is any private communication on the network is in direct messages. By implementing a feature that allows people to send tweets to friends to reply in private, people might be inclined to have more intimate conversations around news and events, and share more frequently on Twitter.Twitter has been slow to implement features of the Visual Web—something Pinterest pioneered. The social network took their time adding in-line images and GIF support, and recently acquired Madbits that will help them dive even deeper into images. With Conversations, Pinterest once again introduced a feature Twitter should implement on its own platform. And hopefully it won’t take Twitter as long to catch up this time. Lead image courtesy of Pinterest. Facebook is Becoming Less Personal and More Pro…last_img read more

Bollywood spoof masters go viral

first_imgShah Rukh Khan is well known for his wit and humour. In his newly released hilarious interview on Barely Speaking With Arnub, the Badshaah of Bollywood has confirmed that a dash of humour can create a significant marketing trend. After Alia Bhatt’s clever video that targeted her ‘lack of intelligence’, SRK is the latest celebrity to resort to spoofing his own work to promote his upcoming film Happy New Year. Popular spoof portal The Viral Fever (TVF) features “Arnub with a U”-a character who impersonates the mannerisms of a famous television journalist-interviewing King Khan and, thus, offering a few hilarious moments to the actor’s fans.During the course of the interview, which has almost instantly grabbed the attention of netizens, SRK admits that his best action role so far has been at Wankhede Stadium where he had an infamous spat with security officials during an IPL match. SRK says it was his best role because he could “openly abuse in front of kids with impressionable minds”.Arnub, in his boisterous style, also questions SRK on the number of awards he has purchased. “Out of the 560 awards that I’ve received, the first 280 have been purchased by me and for the rest, they (the organisers) have been paying me to accept it to make their events look good,” SRK says with a straight face. Amid a volley of gags, Khan also confesses he is trying to revive director Farah Khan’s career with Happy New Year.Bollywood has been the target of jokes for long. The newly visible silver lining is that stars are now mustering up courage to openly laugh at themselves too. Alia Bhatt undoubtedly became a trendsetter with AIB’s runaway hit Alia Bhatt: Genius of the Year depicting the young actress’ journey “from Dolce Gabbana to smart like Shabana”.advertisementTVF founder Arunabh Kumar aims to make Barely Speaking with Arnub a platform to feature more celebrities from various walks of life. “The young breed of celebrities enjoys quirky humour. Shah Rukh and Farah have always been sporting. We had floated a couple of ideas and SRK instantly approved a chat show with Arnub,” said Arunabh who has previously managed to tickle the audience’s funny bones with Gaane Wala Song-a spoof on the song Ishq Wala Love from Karan Johar’s Student Of The Year. Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motawane have also featured in a TVF video titled ‘Spaceship of Pretentious’.IIT Kharagpur graduate Arunabh brought TVF into prominence with the Qtiyapa series with Rowdies-a spoof on reality TV show Roadies-that started a new trend. The TVF video with Shah Rukh is like homecoming for Arunabh who has earlier worked with Red Chillies Entertainment and assisted Farah on the sets of Om Shanti Om.Arunabh hopes to have more “political incorrectness” with his “guests sitting in an uncomfortable chair”. AIB co-founder Tanmay Bhatt admits that film stars in India outright refuse a parody on themselves. “The audience at large gives them a demigod status which makes them stifflipped,” said Tanmay, who was surprised at the mammoth response Genius of the Year received. The AIB team had also proposed a parody on Dhoom 3 which was, unfortunately, turned down by Yash Raj Films. With comedy going viral, especially online, there has been a rise in edgy humour and some of the smartest brains are in action to create refreshingly funny takes on various aspects of society, including Bollywood.Websites such as The UnReal Times features satirical stories and its growing popularity stresses that tongue-in-cheek humour is being appreciated. Run by IIM Ahmedabad graduates Chepuri Krishna and Karthik Laxman, these articles are their way of inviting attention.THE VIRAL FEVERWHAT: Creates parodies on ‘everything popular’ in IndiaFUN QUOTIENT: Shah Rukh hit the nail on the head in the latest TVF video interview with “Arnub with a U” (a talk show host with a bad attitude) where the Bollywood superstar “did a Wankhede” when he tore off a script and heckled the host for offering him the role of a father. Shah Rukh made it clear that he will “never ever, ever, ever, play a father”. The actor also revealed on the show that he signed Happy New Year to revive director Farah Khan’s career after Tees Maar Khan. SRK’s allnew attempt to promote his upcoming film online became a huge hit, especially among youngsters, and the episode received more than 5,50,580 views within 24 hours of its launch. In the past, TVF Qtiyapa has successfully created a few fake takes on ‘everything popular’ in India, which includes Salman’s Bhai Ho-A 200 crore film, A Bollywood Party Song (feat Yo Yo Party Sing and A Decade-long Soap. A parody on an Indian art house film, which became immensely popular, even featured filmmakers Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motawane, and actor Ronit Roy.advertisementALL INDIA BAKCHODWHAT: Creates spoof videos on trending topicsFUN QUOTIENT: Alia Bhatt became the most talked-about celebrity in the cyber space after she appeared in the video Genius of the Year. After a faux pas on Koffee with Karan-where she named Prithviraj Chauhan as the President of India-made her a butt of all jokes, the Bollywood newbie decided to join the Dumb Belle Mental Gym to upgrade her mental aptitude, as shown in the video which was widely applauded.Directed by film-maker Shakun Batra, the video featured Alia’s dad and film-maker Mahesh Bhatt, producer Karan Johar and co-actors Arjun Kapoor and Parineeti Chopra who sportingly elevated humour levels in the video. The popular video has received more than 61,97,665 views so far and the brilliant stunt has brightened Alia’s image as a popular youth icon.THE UnREAL TIMESWHAT: Publish fake articles on Bollywood and Hollywood stars, national and international topics.FUN QUOTIENT: More than a dozen writers are involved in giving peculiar twists to anything newsworthy at The UnReal Times. The showbiz section of the website has some wildly-imagined features that take potshots at Bollywood and Hollywood biggies.Recent stories that have become popular are about Arvind Kerjriwal being made India’s official entry to the Oscars, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s plan to start Jayalalithaa’s ‘Amma Unavagam’ in California to sell idlis for $1, Anushka warning Virat to score big or she’ll get a lip-job done again, and Uday Chopra hiring Ravi Shastri to revive his acting career.THE VIGIL IDIOTWHAT: Reviews movies through simple cartoon stripsFUN QUOTIENT: Anything regular is boring for the cartoonist at The Vigil Idiot who makes desperate attempts to find logic in Indian mainstream films, only to witness failure every time. “Stripping the movie that just released” is the mantra that goes behind the cartoon strips which feature Bollywood’s lead casts in a no-frills, stick figure doodles. Cartoonist Sahil Rizwan realised the importance of taking out the “nonsensical bit” from Bollywood films to derive humour and the latest to be reviewed (read spoofed) by him is Bang Bang!SHUDDH DESI ENDINGSWHAT: YouTube channel that creates alternate and quirky endings for Bollywood hitsFUN QUOTIENT: The Shuddh Desi Endings team creates film parody videos by featuring its lead cast in their animated versions. Bored of same old style Bollywood movie endings, the team releases one animated video after another with “zara hatkey endings”. A few freshly imagined funny titles include Gandey (Gundey), Lingam Returns (Singham Returns), Dal Chilka Dal (Bhaag Milkha Bhaag), Bhidupanti (Heropanti), Chu-States (2 States) and Ek Milan (Ek Villian).OH YASHRAJ, LIGHTEN UPThe Internet is filled with movie trailer parodies and a simple search on YouTube will prove just that. However, when the AIB team proposed a parody on Dhoom 3 to the Yash Raj Films (YRF) in November last year, the studio turned it down and alerted their antipiracy cell because in India “studios get grumpy and take these parodies down”.advertisementA month later, AIB came up with a hilarious reply: They dedicated a song to the “Grumpy Old Bollywood” and tried to explain that “imitation is flattery” by asked, “O Yashraaaaj, where’s your sense of humour?” The video went viral within hours, so much so that YRF even tweeted, “Cool stuff. Love the way they have taken our pants off.” But they still said no to the parody.last_img read more

Inaugural Palmerston Touch Competition To Commence

first_imgWith the help of the Palmerston Raiders Rugby League Club who have recently received a $7 million upgrade of the All Phones Park complex, the venue will provide a perfect home to the new competition. So far there have been 14 team nominations across Men’s, Women’s and Mixed divisions that will take the fields tonight in a social round of games to kick off the competition, with still an inflow of team nominations. There is also a scattering of junior team nominations and overall there has been a positive response for the competition in the community.PTA committee member Michael Fleming said that seeing the competition come to fruition has been exciting and he can’t wait for tonight’s games. “Seeing that it is such a high growth area population-wise and that the population is a young population, a few of us got together and decided that it was time for us to get a comp organised,” Fleming said. Fleming, who has been involved in Touch Football for over 20 years, is a local resident and says it is rewarding to see the new competition commence in Palmerston. Fleming says that there has been plenty of support from the community, as well as from Touch Football Northern Territory.  “There’s been a lot of work from Steve Bow the NT President, Isobel Appo and Tianna Baird who are involved in the NT Office and very much so with Mark Nolen at Palmerston Raiders, without those guys it probably wouldn’t have got off the ground.” “Charlene Scott and Jackie Fredericks, they are the other two people on the Palmerston committee that have been helping out a lot too,” said Fleming. The creation of this competition not only reflects the growth of the greater Darwin region, but also the growth of Touch Football in regional areas of Australia, and in particular Touch Football in the Northern Territory. For news, updates and results, please visit the Palmerston Touch Association page:www.palmerston.mytouchfooty.comlast_img read more

ESPN’s Poll Reveals Alabama Perceived As College Football’s Best Coaching Job

first_imgESPN SportsNation poll about the best college football coaching job. It’s always fun to debate which college football program is the most prestigious in the country. There are a number of ways to measure such an honor, including determining which head coaching job is the most coveted in the country. We went through and named our 16 most desirable head coaching gigs this past November. This week, ESPN asked the general public to chime in.In an ESPN SportsNation poll, Alabama was voted as the best coaching job in college football. The Crimson Tide received 35% of the vote, ahead of No. 2 Ohio State by a decent margin. Texas and USC came in third and fourth, though, to be fair, there were only four teams listed. “Other” took home 26% of the vote.Fans in specific regions made it clear that they believe their program should have been listed. It’s obvious that supporters of Oregon, Michigan, Nebraska, Oklahoma, LSU, Florida and Florida State felt that they should have been options as well. ESPNESPNDo you agree with the poll? Is Alabama really the best job in the country, or has Nick Saban’s success made it that way?last_img read more

Also, Harper ranks as such a bargain because he’s the victim of a salary structure designed to pay young players nowhere near what they’re worth.4Harper signed a short-term extension last winter, which earned him slightly more in 2015 than he would have gotten under his original rookie contract, but it still pales in comparison to what a long-term extension would have yielded Harper on the open market. So being “valuable” in this sense is a pretty bad thing from a player’s perspective. But from a team’s viewpoint, it’s a bonanza to have a player generate nearly $73 million of excess productivity. And until baseball salaries rise even more in future seasons, giving some other young player the chance to create even more surplus value, Harper can say he was the most valuable MVP in history, in all kinds of ways. Many picked Harper’s Nationals to win the World Series before the season, but they finished as one of the most disappointing teams in recent memory. That wasn’t Harper’s fault, though. He led the majors in wins above replacement (WAR), no matter which version of the metric you look at.Harper deserves the title of “most valuable” if we’re talking on-field performance — his was a fantastic season that probably ranks among the top 50 to 100 in MLB history. But his 2015 campaign also merits that designation if we look at how good he was relative to his salary. By that definition, Harper’s might have even been the most valuable season a baseball player has ever had.FanGraphs has a way of converting a player’s WAR into his monetary value on the open (free agent) market. The site calculates how much teams spend per projected WAR in a given season1Technically, the preceding offseason, since they’re looking at the market for free-agent salaries and those free agents’ projected WAR. and then applies that “market price” to each player’s output at the end of the season. That gives us a sense of how much it would cost to buy the WAR he created. FanGraphs isn’t the only one to perform this calculation — so we’re dealing with a bit of estimation here — but if you take a consensus average, teams were willing to pay about $7.7 million for every additional WAR this season. That means Harper’s 9.7 wins above replacement2Averaging together the WAR values at FanGraphs and Baseball-Reference.com. would have been valued at a staggering $75.4 million on the open market. That $75.4 million figure is the most that any player’s MLB season has been worth since 2002, the first season for which FanGraphs lists dollar-value estimates.3Although I didn’t use FanGraphs’ individual dollar numbers for my rankings, I did need its league-wide figures to help estimate the going rate per WAR in MLB. And because salaries have grown so dramatically over the past 13 years — Barry Bonds’s outrageously great 12.2 WAR was worth “just” $46 million in 2002 — it’s safe to say that Harper’s 2015 output was also worth the most money of any player’s in baseball history.Of course, a player’s value is not purely about the market value of his performance. Chris Davis and Mookie Betts each produced about 5.4 WAR this season, production valued at $42 million, but Davis was paid $12 million for it; by contrast, Betts was paid $514,500, making him a far better value. And if we look at the surplus value of a player’s WAR beyond what his club paid him, Harper once again had the “most valuable” season of any MLB player since 2002: Carlos GomezBrewers20137.957.24.352.9 Mike TroutAngels20147.958.51.057.5 read more
